Scrubs VS. Soft Peel for Facial Exfoliating

Exfoliating is an essential and regular step to everyone’s skincare regime as it removes the build-up of dead skin cells from the outermost layer of our epidermis. In giving the skin a helping hand of desquamation, the complexion looks brighter, feels softer and will accept more easily and readily all of the active ingredients from moisturisers, serums and masks. Once a week is the perfect commitment to exfoliating, but it can depend on the individual: if sunscreen, tan or heavy foundations are used regularly, or the skin is very dry / flaky, 2-3 times a week is better. Daily is never necessary! The skin can easily become dehydrated with over exfoliating. Note: in this, we speak of facial exfoliating, although that for the body is equally important!

There are two types of mechanical (performed by hands) facial exfoliants, the first being the one that most will think of automatically:

A Scrub: Micro beads in a gel, cream or oil base and gentle circular motions can be used to exfoliate the skin. Many find it a handy product in the shower as it can be rinsed easily. Facial exfoliant micro beads are polished or rounded so they are not jagged on the skin (beware of making scrubs for your face at home with sea salt or sugar: these pieces can damage and upset the skin). Micro beads are often made of micro plastics in many generic products which when we rinse down the sink are being brought back into our food chain so it is wise to check out the ingredients list to know what exactly you are using.

PHYT’S Activ’Peel is an exfoliant using polished bamboo particles instead of plastic (environmentally friendly) to gently exfoliate and bring radiance to the complexion. Lemon peel and grapefruit peel essential oils are used to lighten and brighten the complexion for instantaneous results so this exfoliant suits dull, sallow skin, or an oily to combination skin.

A Soft Peel: The lesser known of mechanical exfoliation is a soft peel, scrub or en Français a Gommage. This is a cream product which is applied to the skin in a thin layer. It is then exfoliated by gentle circular movements, adhering to dead cells revealing a soft, hydrated and calm skin. No water is needed. They are sometimes clay, gel or cellulose based.

PHYT’S Gommage Contact+ has a plant cellulose base with Ylang Ylang for anti-inflammatory and toning effect and sunflower oil to hydrate the skin as you exfoliate. It is for all skin types but especially dry, dehydrated, sensitive, inflamed or reactive (acne, rosacea, dermatitis etc.). Apply after cleansing to a dried skin in a thin layer, lips and eyelids included. Then use fingertips to gently exfoliate the Gommage off by small circular motion. Over the sink is wise as the particles fall!

The main point for all exfoliation is to be gentle with your skin: a scrub does not mean to scour like a cooker! Skin is silk: condition it with care 🙂

Ingredient Spotlight: What are parabens, and why we don’t want them in our cosmetics

At V.Claire Natural Cosmetics we choose to provide cosmetics that are natural, organic, and active and results driven. The more we discuss ingredients at HQ, the more we solidify our strong desire to spread our message: cosmetics with a conscience. Simply put, every ingredient our ranges PHYT’S, Couleur Caramel and Acorelle use are selected with purpose, to give our skin and health benefits rather than compromise by using controversial synthetic ingredients.

An ingredient that many may have heard of is paraben: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben – anything ending in paraben! They have been used for decades as cosmetic industries grew and mass production increased. Parabens are a synthetic and cheap way to preserve cosmetics: hair care, skin care, makeup, deodorants, sun creams… they are said to be anti-microbial for longer preservation of your products. Controversy arose in the 90s and over the past twenty years, many papers have been published after research trials were carried out; the best known being Philippa Dabre from the University of Redding, UK. In the study, it was discovered that parabens were found in amongst breast cancer tissue and that parabens may mimic oestrogen to proliferate the spread.

Be it true or not that parabens may exacerbate or play a role in cancer formation, it gives us food for thought. This chemical penetrates our skin and it is something that our organs have to process; another substance to break down and excrete. How many cosmetics do you use in a day? That’s a lot of paraben never mind the other synthetic ingredients alongside them!

Many products have become “paraben free” which is stated on their packaging. Natural products, like our ranges, use plant alcohols and the components that create essential oils which are anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and give a natural scent to the product. You will see this written at the end of the ingredients list, for example: geraniol, linalool, limonene, etc.

We simply like to give you more choice: high quality products with awesome plant based ingredients that are created by environmentally sound companies… what’s not to love! Check out the comparisons for yourself… which tempts you more?!

To fake it or to not fake it?

Hmm… just to confirm we are talking about tan!

There is a type of beautiful white milky perfect skin that I think would be criminal to colour. However, if your skin is this type embrace it as it is quite rare and beautiful. For all the others including myself, when summer comes (and I am heading to the South of France to visit my dear family) and you look at the state of your poor skin looking kind of greyish or purplish due to the lack of sun and vitamin D, you have the obligation to at least make it look…well…healthier!! The legs being the biggest culprit!!! It is time to use PHYT’S VOILE DORE 🙂

Voile Doré moisturising lotion is a self tan free of synthetic developers. It uses plant derived ingredients to deepen any skin tone naturally.

Voile Doré can be used on your face as it is non-comedogenic, so very safe to apply on your face to achieve a sun-kissed glow and your body.

The tan is certified 100% natural and develops over several hours. The application can be repeated if you wish to intensify the colour, so even the clearest skin can use it.

Application: Gently exfoliate your face with Phyt’s Gommage Contact + or Activ’peel and body with Gommage Corps, then apply Voile Doré evenly with vinyl gloves or a tanning glove.

If your skin is particularly dry, moisturise it after exfoliating it and then apply Voile Doré. Lait Corps Fleurie or Jasmine are your best bet.

NOW we are ready to put our pins on display 😉

Ingredients: Natural DHA from sugar beets to develop the colour, Wheatgerm oil and Vitamin E which nourish and act as an antioxidant to protect the skin, Peppermint to refresh and clarify the skin and Rosewood to sooth any sensitivity.

Below: model’s right leg with Voile Doré; model’s left leg with no tan.

Simple Sophistication – liner and lip

For this Couleur Caramel video, we kept our model’s (20) look simple, chic and elegant with fresh skin, black liner and a matte red lip. This is one of our favourite looks at Colour Caramel because it’s classic and really shows off the professional quality of pigments and hold in our natural, organic products. We are just utterly in love (& envy!) with this young model’s skin and to overdo a makeup look to distract from it would be a sin!! At every age, skin should enhanced not masked and that is always our aim when it comes to complexion makeup. Even with redness / blemishes, the goal should be to counteract, the word coverage sounds like we should have to hide! Compliment your skin and show it off we say!! See the video here on our Youtube Channel: https://youtu.be/YBiEiWxgMcs

What we used:

Makeup Base – White Base Primer / Moisturiser applied with Foundation Brush n°04. This primer is so much more than just creating a perfect makeup base: it hydrates the skin, nourishes, protects and gives an unbeatable radiance with natural mineral components. Cornflower oil soothes, Shea butter and almond protect, while Kalahari melon oil. Suitable for most skin types (not very oily).

Foundation – Hydra Jeunesse n°23 & n°24 (mixed to match some remnant tan on the neck) applied with Foundation Brush n°04. Our newest and most fabulous addition to our family of foundations, Hydra Jeunesse is a youth inducing, radiance injecting bath of hydration in the form of a foundation. It suits all, from teens to 100+ and gives the skin the most glowing finish. Inca Inchi oil with Hyaluronic acid and brown algae: full of powerful vitamins and antioxidants.

Powder – Silk Powder was created specifically for television and stage to remove excess shine and to set / hold foundations. Rice starch and mica absorb any excess shine or oil leaving a beautiful matte finish which literally feels like silk. The best product for photography at such events where shine is a no no. Bridal powder anyone?! Applied here with Powder Brush n°01.

Bronzer – Terre Caramel n°25 applied with Kabuki Brush n°02 and Retractable Brush n°03 on cheeks and brow bone. Used around the face and neck to frame. Jojoba wax and shea butter treat and soften and the colour the bronzers give can be deepened depending on skin colour.

Blusher –n°53 Light Pink applied with Retractable Brush n°03. Applied to the apples of her cheeks and up and out over the cheek bone. This blush has a mix of pink and peach tones with a hint of iridescence to enliven again after the matte powder finish.

Eyebrows – Eyebrow Kit n°28 Blonde applied with Brush n°10. Strictly powders for this look to emphasise shape with a softness. Brows frame the face yes, but should not look like they have been applied with a permanent marker. Follow the natural contour of the brow line and muscles, keep it light, and build… you can’t go wrong!

Eye Shadow – Essential Eye Palette n°02: n°011 Rosy Beige over entire lid with Brush n°06 to softly disperse the colour. Contrasts nicely with matt Bronzer n°25 used on the brow bone.

Liquid Liner – n°07 Black. For that feline flick. A thickened line was built with a subtle flick at the outer corner. Some eyelids can allow a more obvious flick, but depending on the natural contours of the eyelid and socket, it is not always achievable to create such an elongated wing. Work with your eye shape and practice makes perfect! Remember, everyone should have a black liquid eyeliner to simply line the root of the upper lashes. Easy for all ages and eye types, it automatically thickens the lash line and lifts the eyelid for a wider eye. Try it!

Mascara – n°71 Black Volumising. To thicken and lengthen the lashes and complete the eye look.

Lipstick – Pencil n°07 Red and Lipstick n°122 Red Currant (a matte red, 3rd in line below) applied with Pro Lip Brush n°14. Always use a lip liner to avoid colours running, create shape and to give long lasting hold to your lip colours. Matte for long lasting colour and hold. Use lip balm before application to soften the lips as matte lipsticks are not as nourishing and softening as creamier / glossy ones.

Summer Fun – young, fresh and colourful!

For this Couleur Caramel video, we wanted to keep the look fun and colourful for summer time! At 16, our model will have her summer to herself and long days and evenings with her friends. This look could easily be transitioned for music festivals / concerts with liquid liner, lashes and the obvious compulsory glitter! But we kept the look simpler to just focus on youthful beauty and radiance, splashed with vibrancy for eyes and lips. Strong contouring is out, thank heavens for that, so it is finally acceptable again by the masses to embrace the true beauty of your natural skin, which at Couleur Caramel, we are all about. Fresh skin, light bronzing, groomed brows and lashes and all shades of pink in between! Follow the link for our YouTube Video https://youtu.be/Ua5VbK3x-gU

Partnering with the Marie Keating Foundation

Our company V.Claire has developed a complete natural ethos over the years. By meeting women through promotional days in beauty salons and health stores, we can connect and talk about the tribulations of life! Health and well being over the past few years has become a big concern. With this knowledge, it brought us to contact the Marie Keating Foundation because we think we can help to improve women’s well being by using certified 100% natural cosmetics. Natural cosmetics are more gentle, soothing and very efficient to bring nourishment as it doesn’t contain any controversial ingredients.

The Marie Keating Foundation is a very reputable, transparent association and we were delighted to collaborate in brining a positive outlook to every person going through treatment. Even in time of treatment, a bit of loving and tender care which can appear as a bouquet of flowers, or as we are concerned a nice hand cream or makeup, or a gentle natural scent can bring a smile, comfort and positivity.

COSMETICS WITH A CONSCIENCE

To follow up on our event in Dawson Street and our video, I would like to explain in very practical terms why our company VClaire Natural Cosmetics has chosen to distribute certified natural products.

WHY? Very simple: Because it makes sense.

We women are using a lot of cosmetics, from skincare to hair colour, nail varnish, body lotion, false tan, deodorant and so on… If I offer you a choice between two glasses of water, one being pure and the other with controversial ingredients, which one would you drink?

It is quiet simple: taking care of ourselves should be one of our biggest priorities. It is a responsibility we owe to ourselves and our loved ones. If you can help your body by using quality ingredients to benefit its functioning why wouldn’t you?

You know the expression “Your health is your wealth”.

We, the consumers, can decide and make our choice on which cosmetics to use by reading the list of ingredients of the products we are using. Making sense?:)
